Well known television identity and regional food champion Maggie Beer made her way to Queensland last week to launch her new book, “Maggie’s Harvest”.  Local cheesemaker Christopher Ganzer was on hand at a private presentation of Ms Beer’s book at the Brisbane providores, Black Pearl Epicure.  Kingaroy Cheese's "Bunya Black" was featured in the dessert course along with three Christmas themed dishes.  Mr Ganzer said, “I had the opportunity to present our cheese at Maggie’s book launch, as Black Pearl, is the distributor in Queensland for both Kingaroy Cheese and Maggie Beer products”.

Maggie Beer, presents seasonal recipes on the ABC Television program “The Cook And The Chef” and has been a significant leader in the development of regional foods in the Barossa Valley and South Australia.  Over the past 40 years, she has developed and introduced a range of products to the specialty food market including pheasant and verjuice.

Wine and Food In The Park (issued 6 March 2007)

The Tarong Mine “Wine and Food In The Park” event has a special place in the heart of Kingaroy Cheese.  In 2002, this local cheese maker first launched its product to the public.  Company cheese maker, Christopher Ganzer said, “It was a very exciting day to present our cheese and even though this will now be our 6th time as a feature stall holder it is still an exciting event to be at”.

With over 30 medals accumulated at dairy produce shows around Australia, Kingaroy Cheese has lead the way in the promotion and development of the South Burnett as a gourmet food destination.  “Kingaroy Cheese has worked hard to produce a quality product and promote the region and that is reflected in the amount of people visiting our site at the Old Butter Factory, but it also has a lot to do with local community support for our products”.

Mr Ganzer added, “Wine and Food in the Park is one of those great events supported by the community and I am very proud of the support we get from Kingaroy people and the number of friends they bring a long”.  To make sure festival goers could get a chance to try local foods with South Burnett wine, Mr Ganzer highlighted that Kingaroy cheese would be making cheese platters throughout the day.

Grand Dairy Awards (issued 22 Feb 2007)

The Grand Dairy Awards are going to be held in Melbourne on the 9th Feb and Kingaroy Cheese was eligible to enter Stuart River Triple Cream Brie.  The actual judging was held in November last year and while the product I sent was pretty good, you just never know what the competition is going to be like. Dairy Australia calls this competition the "best of the best", given that you have to win a gold medal at a major event during 2006 and the brie won 3 golds at 4 shows.
I always love award presentations like the Grand Dairy Awards as I never go in with the expectation of winning anything - that way if someone I know wins I can go out drinking with them or alternatively they can come drinking with me if I win. Most of the specialty cheesemakers are small businesses like Kingaroy Cheese so there is a great fraternity.

I plan to head out to the Yarra Valley and Milawa to check what is happening with Australia's specialty cheese leaders (try and learn a bit from a food tourism point of view).  For all the doom and gloom that seems to be talked about in tourism these days, the holiday period and 2006 for that matter has actually been a too bad when you add up the figures.  The South Burnett is making some good progress with consistency in food and the last couple of wine vintages have been very good, with 2007 progressing very well. For those who thought I was hiding away in Kingaroy in 2006 you were pretty close to the mark.  2006 was really about getting all the little things right in production and distribution and in retrospect it was an excellent year - the least stressful by quite some way. Milk quality was great, staff stepped up to the mark, finished product quality and yields were outstanding and sales up 60%.

So on Monday 12th Feb, if I have a hangover, that will not be a true sign that I may have won anything in Melbourne - but I will let you know how I went.
